Patellar dislocation, also referred to as a subluxing patella, occurs when the patella (kneecap) is completely outside its groove resulting in the kneecap being pulled outside the knee joint. During the initial patellar dislocation ligaments that were holding the kneecap in position are torn. It is common for recurring knee misalignment and knee pain to follow after an injury.
Symptoms of patellar dislocation may include pain around the outside of the kneecap, discomfort during activities, recurring feeling of kneecap moving out of position, pain when bending or straightening the leg, and swelling behind and around the knee joint.
Supporting a dislocated kneecap is important to prevent recurring derangement and pain. To help alleviate discomfort, swelling, and recurring patellar dislocation, browse our large selection of knee braces, cold packs, and many other types of knee supports.
