Common in children and young athletes, Osgood-Schlatters disease can be a cause of knee pain. This condition is characterized by inflammation, pain, and swelling in the tibial tuberosity, or bony protrusion below the patella.
Symptoms of Osgood-Schlatters disease may include swelling just below the patella (kneecap), pain and tenderness during exercise, and discomfort when contracting the quadriceps against resistance or when contracting the muscles with the leg straight. These symptoms can be brought on by running or jumping or any activity that causes strain to the patella tendon.
