Cold therapy is best used for immediate relief of injuries. The application of cold narrows the blood vessels, limiting the blood flow to the injury and providing temporary relief. Ice can be applied to an injury several times a day for 10-15 minutes an application. Be sure to allow the injury to return to its regular temperature before reapplying any cold pack. To avoid further injury, do not apply cold packs directly to the skin. Cold therapy is generally used to relieve pain after exercise or other strenuous activity. Heat products are commonly used to relieve pain before any exercise, and can be found here.
